Training and Technical Assistance

The National Judicial College (NJC) and its National Tribal Judicial Center (NTJC) are prepared provide office-based and onsite training and technical assistance (TTA) to all federally-recognized tribes and tribal justice systems to maintain and enhance tribal court operations and the administration of tribal justice.

The NTJC is also the BJA-funded Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation (CTAS) Tribal Justice Systems Program training and technical assistance provider along with its partners, the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI) at the University of North Dakota as well as the Center for Court Innovation (CCI) Tribal Justice Exchange. In that role, we will assist CTAS PA3 tribal grantees and other federally recognized tribes seeking TTA related to initiating and implementing the projects and programs identified in their award, as well as any other assistance or support needed for tribal judiciaries. Examples of technical assistance previously provided include code drafting and code review, the development of court operational policies and procedures, the creation of court forms that help streamline court operations for court customers and court staff, judicial ethics standards, courtroom procedural rules, review of judicial benchbooks, development of tribal bar exams, and skills training for tribal judges and court personnel.

The goal of NTJC, TJI and CCI is to provide training and technical assistance to tribal justice systems that is customized to be responsive to each tribal community’s unique concepts of Indigenous justice and that includes the hands-on experience of our collective staffs comprised of current and former tribal court judges, prosecutors, defenders and court administrators. We can also facilitate peer-to-peer interactions with other successful tribal justice systems. We maintain a cadre of tribal justice subject matter experts we can utilize to assist any tribal justice system, CTAS grantees and non-grantees, with enhancing or expanding their capacities.
