In this new course type by The National Judicial College, we will take judges to the settings of some of our country's landmark legal decisions. First stop: Little Rock, Arkansas.
In the wake of Board v Brown of Education, decided in 1954, the Supreme Court of the United States decided Cooper v. Aaron, which articulated the principle that the Supreme Court's decisions are final, overriding all state and public officials. In the years following Brown, Arkansas officials opposed desegregation, going as far as to amend the state constitution, and enacted a multitude of plans to halt the integration of schools throughout the state.
This course will visit local sites in Little Rock, learn from local historians and explore the importance of the Cooper decision going forward.
