NJC’s Judicial Renaissance course offers participants a profound "Renaissance" of the mind and spirit.

This course is an intellectual retreat that transcends the boundaries of conventional legal education to consider how history, culture and the arts inform the essence of jurisprudence and justice systems. It's an invitation to be part of a community that values lifelong learning and to contribute to a dialogue that elevates the administration of justice to its noblest form. Participants do not merely expand their legal expertise; they embark on a quest to broaden their horizons and deepen their understanding of the human condition. They rediscover the depth and richness of their role in the judiciary and leave inspired to bring a deeper understanding and perspective to their work.

The 2027 program will be located in Munich, Germany and planning is underway. As with all Judicial Renaissance programs, the course will include local cultural and educational experiences. Germany is a modern country with strong ties to the United States and a rich and varied history. Along with international presenters across varied disciplines, there will be field trips to local courts, arts venues and museums. Visits to Nuremberg, Salzburg and the Dachau Concentration Memorial Site may be included.

What participants have said about previous Judicial Renaissance programs:

“The NJC program awakened parts of my brain that have been dormant. In a world where STEM gets the spotlight, it was so refreshing to spend a week immersed in the liberal arts thinking about big topics like how do democracies form and how do they collapse, the importance of literature and theater in politics, the role of the judge in society, and approaching problem solving with an adaptive leadership style. I feel more engaged and more alive!" - 2023 Participant

“I learned that I as a jurist must take off my blinders and experience the world and topics and people beyond my courtroom. After the amazing first day and evening, I woke up every morning excited and wondering what I would experience next. I soaked in every moment knowing that I would never had an opportunity like this again. I truly think this was a life-altering experience for me." -2023 Participant

Tuition covers course fees, cultural activities and group dinner, and breakfast and lunches. Tuition does not include airfare, lodging or other dinners. Unfortunately, the NJC cannot offer scholarships for this course. This course may be eligible for CJE credit hours, but due to the international scope, NJC cannot predict the number of credits that may be approved by your state.

Please note the 2026 Judicial Renaissance: Japan course sold out almost nine months in advance. We are anticipating similar demand for the Germany program.

Previous Judicial Renaissances have been held in Bordeaux, France; Seoul, South Korea; Athens, Greece; Lisbon, Portugal; and Japan.
