Every day on and off the bench, judges face ethics quandaries with little training and few resources for support. The answers are not always clear and the stakes are high in the politically charged environment we live in today.

In 2025, there were over 125 public dispositions against state court judges, several of whom were removed from office. According to reports, at least 15 other judges agreed to resign or retire. All these are in addition to the host of sanctions, suspensions, and reprimands that are issued every year.

This faculty-led online course will use guided analysis with experienced faculty to teach you to identify and distinguish between proper and improper court-related behavior, communication between lawyers and litigants, and interactions with pro se/unrepresented litigants. Each week, participants will complete reading and homework assignments, submitted online, before joining a one-hour virtual classroom discussion. Sessions will focus on the use of social media, managing self-represented litigants, judicial elections and politics, extrajudicial activities, disqualification, and recusal.

This six-week course provides judges with a solid foundation for evaluating the everyday ethical conundrums they face on the bench.

"This was one of the BEST classes I have taken. Very informative and well put together." - 2024 Participant

"The materials and discussions were engaging and challenged us to envision various less obvious scenarios in which we would have to carefully weigh our conduct. One of the best courses that I have taken since being on the bench, hands down! - 2024 Participant
