About half the states permit the use of recreational cannabis, while 3/4 of the states permit the use of medical marijuana. Numerous studies link the increase in drug-impaired driving to the legalization of marijuana use. This program will provide an overview of the data on both alcohol and drug-impaired driving, and examine the consequences of the legalization of both medical and recreational cannabis on impaired driving. The faculty will distinguish the effects of alcohol and cannabis-impairment on the skills necessary for driving, and examine the challenges of detecting cannabis-impaired driving and outline the role of the Drug Recognition Expert in identifying marijuana impairment. Finally, the program will offer recommendations on the supervision of cannabis-impaired drivers.
