Cahill, a judge of the Fourth Judicial District in Minneapolis, delivered the 141st Justice Jackson Lecture on October 10, 2022 with a speech titled “Stoicism and the Art of Judging, or Lessons Learned from a High-Profile Criminal Trial.”
Best known for overseeing the 2021 trial that found Chauvin guilty of murder during the arrest of George Floyd, Peter Cahill has been a district court judge since 2007. He has served in the criminal division, the juvenile division, and in the drug-treatment court during his tenure on the bench. He was also the assistant chief judge of the district for two years and served as chief judge of the district for four years. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was in the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for 10 years, where he served as a violent-crimes prosecutor, the head of juvenile prosecution, and, lastly, chief deputy county attorney. He also spent two years as an assistant public defender and 11 years as a litigator in private practice.
