Judges to meet with students at Hug High on Thursday

RENO, NV (April 18, 2022) — The next Reading & Robes™ program featuring judges in robes teaching school children about civics and the judiciary is happening this week.

WHERE: Procter R. Hug High School, 2880 Sutro St., Reno, NV

WHEN: 7:30 a.m. to 9:40 a.m., Thursday, April 21

WHO: Hon. Michael Douglas, retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nevada; Senior Judge Larry Sage of Sparks Municipal Court and an international judicial and rule-of-law adviser; Retired Reno Municipal Court Judge Ken Howard; Lucy Crow, Esq., associate at Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP.

The panel of three judges and one attorney will present to two classes of 100 junior- and senior-level high school students, 200 students in total. Each student will receive a backpack, a pocket-size version of the Constitution, and a signed copy of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s book “The Beloved World of Sonia Sotomayor.”

This program is being put on in conjunction with the Michael L. Douglas Prelaw Fellowship Program, which helps provide undergraduate students with law course and LSAT preparations.

Begun in 2019, Reading & Robes™ is a community-outreach initiative of The National Judicial College. It involves judges, wearing their robes, teaching school children about the courts, civic responsibilities and the power of reading. The program has now reached nearly 3,300 students in 15 states.

Reading & Robes™ typically uses autobiographical works by Justice Sotomayor.
