\r\n\r\nAJEI Summit Update: We are a go for Austin, TX!<\/strong>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nIn less than 30 days, AJEI will present an outstanding lineup of programs to boost your appellate advocacy IQ. And what a lineup it is! The four-day schedule boasts a varied menu of new and innovative topics, but one tradition remains: Dean Erwin Chemerinsky will once again hold us in rapt attention with a 2 ½-hour update of the Supreme Court’s civil and criminal docket.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe Dean’s tour-de-force is just one of the many programming highlights set for Austin! The full schedule can be found here<\/a>.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nIn addition to Thursday evening’s opening reception at the Bullock Texas State History Museum, the Summit will host several Friday afternoon tours and activities, including (1) morning yoga and meditation led by Justice Patricia Alvarez; (2) a moderated discussion of Dr. Robert Livingston’s book, “The Conversation: How Seeking and Speaking the Truth About Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations”; (3) docent-led tours of the Supreme Court of Texas and the state Capitol; (4) group tours of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Zilker Botanical Garden; and (5) a catered lunch cruise on Lady Bird Lake, conveniently located right outside our host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Austin. And, of course, Friday evening will include the always popular Council of Appellate Lawyers-sponsored dine-arounds. Be on the lookout for sign-up sheets for these events!\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn Saturday morning, you can burn off your Friday dinner with a Fun Run\/Walk led by our very own Justice Steven David of the Indiana Supreme Court. Our Saturday evening reception and banquet will feature a performance by The Lehman High School Mariachi, a nationally acclaimed group of young musicians. Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht and Justice Brett Busby, both talented musicians, will also perform. And to cap off the banquet, El Tule, a Latin-themed ensemble, will get the party started!\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAs we have emphasized in earlier messages, Summit planners are committed to the safety and well-being of our attendees. As an added safety measure, we plan to set aside “mask only” tables in the Zilker ballroom.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThank you for your patience and good will as we work to provide a safe and enjoyable Summit for all. Our outstanding lineup kicks off with “Hail to the Chiefs: The 19th Amendment--It is Not Just About Voting.”\r\n\r\nChief Judge James Lockemy (South Carolina Court of Appeals) will moderate an all-star cast of four outstanding jurists: Chief Justices Loretta Rush (Supreme Court of Indiana), Kimberly Budd (Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Council), and Maureen O’Connor (Supreme Court of Ohio), and Chief Judge Priscilla Owen (U.S. Court of Appeals-5th Circuit). They will discuss the challenges they faced along the way to becoming leaders of their courts, and the effect of the 19th Amendment on the face of the legal profession.\r\n\r\nThe Chief’s panel is just one of the many programming highlights set for Austin! The full schedule can be found here<\/a>.\r\n\r\nBring your walking shoes to the Summit! Just a few steps away from the hotel is the Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, which runs alongside Lady Bird Lake. As the city’s website says, the trail is “a lush, urban path that meanders along the water’s edge and passes by skyscrapers, neighborhoods, ball fields and cultural attractions.” This is one of many great attractions near our host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Austin.\r\n\r\nSummit planners are committed to the safety and well-being of Summit attendees. Along with the hotel’s safety protocols<\/a>, our meeting space will facilitate distancing for attendees and presenters. The Zilker ballroom, which will host our sessions, provides over 14,000 square feet of space and a ceiling height of 22 feet. The ballroom, rated to hold more than 1,000 attendees during normal times, will be capped at 400 attendees. Round tables will be set with no more than 4-5 seats instead of the usual 7 to 8. The opening reception at the Bullock Museum will be held in the museum’s Grand Lobby, which has a capacity of 600, and attendees are welcome to tour the separate exhibit areas. Additionally, a color coding system, to reflect your social distancing preference, will be offered at registration.\r\n\r\nMeals also will have enhanced safety measures. Salads and desserts will be individualized; an attendant will be serving hot items behind plexiglass shields. Outdoor and indoor seating options will be available.
